A Divine Visitation

Updated: Mar 17, 2020

Preached by Pastor Dr. Autry Williams

Joshua 5:13-15

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?
15 And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

As we look at our text, there are three important points about the divine visitation that Joshua had with the LORD.

Three Ways to Get Connected to God

  1. What is a Divine Visitation?

  2. The Results of a Divine Visitation

  3. How to Activate a Divine Visitation

What is a Divine Visitation?

The first word divine is defined as, of, or from God. Divine means godly. The next word

visitation simply means a visit. So when we put these two words together then it’s clear that a

divine visitation is a visit from God.

  • A Divine visitation is when the heavens and the earth collaborate

  • A Divine visitation is when the superior of the heavens decides to show mercy, and pay the created; the earth, a visit

  • And a Divine visitation is the answer to every form of frustration and stagnation in your life

When God steps into any difficult situation in your life, the evidence of his divine

visitation will be manifested by his mighty acts, signs and wonders.

In verses 13 and 14 of our text, Joshua had a divine visitation with the captain of the LORD’s hosts. This captain of the LORD’s host is none other than Jesus Christ in one of his Pre-Incarnate appearances in the Old Testament before he came to earth to get him a body.

The captain of the LORD's hosts said to Joshua, “Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy.” And Joshua did so. Joshua obeyed and paid him divine honor.

The Results of a Divine Visitation

When God visits you’ll, you know that you had a divine visitation. Do you want to know how

you’ll know? It’s because everything about you changes.

It’s important to know that every divine visitation culminates in a supernatural

manifestation.

In Joshua chapter 6 we see the results of his divine visitation:

  • The LORD gave Joshua very specific instructions on how to conquer Jericho

  • Joshua relays the LORD’s instructions to the Israelites and they march around the city as told

  • On the seventh day, the Israelites let their voices ring and the walls of Jericho came tumbling down

  • The Israelites completely destroyed Jericho. And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, with the edge of the sword

  • After which, Joshua pronounced a curse upon any man who tried to rebuild Jericho

So as you can see, whenever there’s a divine visitation, tangible results are seen.

How to Activate a Divine Visitation

There are many ways to activate a divine visitation. Do you need speedy intervention from the Lord God Almighty in your matters today? Do you need a divine visitation?

If so, here are three ways to activate a divine visitation:

  1. Through Praise - Acts 16:25 – 26 (Praise ignites the hand of God for a speedy intervention)

  2. Through Prayer and Fasting – Mark chapter 9 (God responds faster when we add fasting to our prayers)

  3. Through Faith – Mark chapter 9 (Faith sees beyond the ordinary; Faith sees with the eye of the supernatural; Faith sees possibilities in the midst of impossibility)

A divine visitation will bring about supernatural results. And we each have the ability to activate a divine visitation through our praise, prayer, fasting and faith.
